The Company

Local Government Council’s are fascinating organisations. They have such a variety of in-house services that are there to support the community of residents, local businesses and visitors to the area.

With around 40 divisions and multiple $$ Billions worth of assets under management, there is no doubt that they are complex and challenging entities. They embrace diversity in their workforce and with the complexity of the organisation there is diversity in the work as well.

From a Finance perspective, the Council’s needs from its Financial divisions have progressed towards a more ‘corporate style’ focusing on more proactive strategic partnering with the Business Units that deliver services to the community.

Located in Southwestern Sydney, there is hybrid workplace flexibility, a 35-hour work week, performance bonuses, guaranteed pay increases, and pretty much an unrivalled level of stability. Working with Council offers a great way to support the local community.

Other benefits include discounted rates at Leisure Centres and the staff gym, and Long Service Leave after 5 years, and Educational Assistance programs supporting relevant post-graduate studies and job specific accreditation.

We are looking for an FP&A specialist with a strategic business partnering approach. This is a newly created role leading an established small team.

The Role

Reporting to the CFO/Executive Director, this new role helps continue the progressiveness the Council is achieving and continues striving for. You’ll be working with the Business Unit Managers who lead the divisions that make up the Council as an operating organisation.

The goal of the position is to be providing strategic analysis from the detailed Financial Reporting - to be more forward looking and proactive with actionable insights rather than reactive.

You’ll be the type who loves getting ‘out into the field’ and getting to know how businesses work and what the divisions need to make better decisions. Your curiosity is needed in this role.

Your tasks and duties will include:

  • Leading the team of 3 Financial Business Partners in providing advice and guidance to the Executive Leadership Team (ELT) and the Business Unit Managers
  • Strategic Financial Planning & Analysis looking at emerging issues and developing strategies to help each division improve their operations and ensuring focusing on better service delivery and increased efficiency
  • Integrated Planning & Reporting (IP&R) – liaising with the IP&R team to meet legislative requirements, providing useful and timely information to the community, presenting and reporting to ELT and Council
  • Ensuring financial systems are providing relevant information to meet the needs of Council’s business unit managers and project reporting requirements
  • Guiding, developing and mentoring your team to help hone their strategic skills and help them grow their careers, looking at succession planning and professional development opportunities

About You

To be successful in this role you will need:

  • Experience in strategic leadership and providing proactive financial planning, analysis, advice and services for a multifaceted business
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal – you’ll be the ‘Financial translator’ who can relay and interpret complex analysis to audiences at all levels of financial competency
  • A track record of achieving continuous improvement and efficiencies, along with demonstrated examples of successful change management
  • Superior customer service, attention to detail, analytical, collaborating, influencing and consulting skills
  • Ability to contribute to the strategic direction of the Division and Council as part of the Management Team with outstanding data analysis and analytical skills

Benefits

  • Salary $147,889 + Super + Car benefit + Performance Bonuses
  • Mentoring and guidance from the experienced CFO and CEO who both come from Commercial backgrounds
  • Stable and secure sector, career development and progression opportunities
  • Annual pay increases, discounted rates at Leisure Centres and the staff gym, and Long Service Leave after 5 years
  • Educational Assistance programs supporting relevant post-graduate studies and job specific accreditation
  • Knowing that your work helps support the local community
